Femininity

Tonight I watched "Sense and Sensibility" on PBS. I love movies based in the 1800's, particularly based on Jane Austen novels. What I love about these movies are the way the ladies are, gentle and feminine, yet strong. There's always something so beautiful about the characters even though they do not "fit" what modern day society says is beautiful.

I find myself wishing things were as they were back in those days. I wish it were not uncommon to dress in a long flowing dress and that sort. I wish that affections were kind and considerate. I wish that manners were top notch and thoughtful.

Can one ever return to those days? Even growing up in the South, where saying "yes, Ma'am" is still valuable (although I am terrible at it), standing when guests enter a room, or curtsying to show reverence to another is almost unheard of. What would happen if you and I suddenly began doing those things again. I'm sure it would seem funny and unusual.

To think.......

I LOVE anything Jane Austen!!! Sadly, I did not get to see this version of Sense & Sensibility (I had DVRed it- can I say that??- and we had satellite trouble and I lost all that I had recorded) but I love the Emma Thompson version a from a few years ago.

And I personally would LOVE to see things return to this kind of gentility toward one another. Ladies being ladies. Men being men. Ladies allowing men to be men (I have heard SEVERAL ladies talk down to men for simply holding the door open for them!!!).

i found your blog by searching for interests in church. i love this post. i too have often thought what would it be like to return to the 'little house' days. ohh it seems so simple and lovely. i also love your desire to be a 'homemaker' i love it!! :) and i've been blessed with more opportunity then i can count by "just" staying at home. oh the horror. when i quit my job after having my first child my grandpa said, oh so now you don't have a job? i said no i do have a very important one. it's said when the world doesn't understand but even more heartbreaking when fellow believers don't. keep on keeping on sister. :) amanda
